Windows XP Audacity Sound File Editor
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. See Article 001 for more information. At the above site click on the "Download Audacity X.X.X" link. Download the non Beta version. On the next page click on the "Audacity X.X.X installer" link a little way down. On the next page click on the "click here" link in the orange part of the Sourceforge.Net page header. If you want to export sound files in .mp3 format you will also need the Lame encoder which is available from the second page you went above. Click on the "Lame MP3 encoder" link under Optional Downloads. On the next page click on the "Lame download page" under "Windows". On the next page click on the "Lame vX.XX.X for Audacity on Windows.exe" link. You will need to place this Lame encoder file in the C:\Program Files\Audacity folder on your PC.
Windows XP Firefox Browser
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US
A real alternative to Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (IE7). This browser is the second most popular browser but with only 10% market penetration it does not attract the hackers as much as IE7. It has some other advantages like many more third party extensions. You still need to keep IE7 and the two browsers will happily work on the same PC (even at the same time). At the above site click on the "Download Firefox - Free" button - I use the English (British) version.
Windows XP Irfanview Picture Viewer / Editor
http://www.irfanview.com
IrfanView is a very compact, fast and innovative free graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista. See Article 001 for more information. At the above site click look for the "Download the current version" box on the right hand side. You need to download both the "Irfanview" link and the ""Plugins/AddOns" link one at a time. At the next page (each time) click on the "Download Now" link. To install Irfanview first double click the iviewXXX_setup.exe file and then the Plugins file. Also check Article 002 for some hints on how best to configure Irfanview.
Windows XP Moffsoft FreeCalc
http://www.moffsoft.com
This is a great alternative to the Microsoft Calculator that you get with the Operating System. This Calculator has a viewable, saveable and printable tape that records your mathematical operations. So if you loose track where you are up to you can easily see what you have done already! At the above site click on the "Downloads" tab in the top line and then look for "Moffsoft FreeCalc" under the Applications heading.
Windows XP Password Safe
http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net
Password Safe is an Open Source (free) tool that allows you to enter the different passwords for all the different programs and websites that you deal with, without actually having to remember all those usernames and passwords. See Article 001 for more information. At the above site click on the "Download" link in the table on the left hand side. On the next page click on the "passwordsafe" link (centre of the table). On the next page click on the "pwsafe-3.16.exe" link only.
Windows XP POP Peeper
http://www.poppeeper.com
POP Peeper is a great little email notifier that will monitor all your email accounts from one System Tray icon. No more logging into multiple web pages to find that you have no mail after all. At the above site click on the "Download" link on the left hand side. On the next page click on the "Download POP Peeper from download.com" link. On the next page click on the "Download Now" link. You will probably need the Web Mail plugin as well so go back to the site above and this time click on the "Plugins" link on the left hand side. On the next page click on the "WebMail" link near the top of the text. On the next page click on the "Download WebMail Plugin [mirror]" link. You will need to place the "WebMail.dll" file in the C:\Program Files\POP Peeper folder on your PC. See Article 019 for more information on POP Peeper.
